During the late afternoon on the 20th of April, Game On got on the courts of Yau Yat Cheun, in Kowloon. Hosting an event, that would give underprivileged children an opportunity, to experience tennis, the feelings it brought people, and how it connected one and other, on and off the court. For this event, Game On collaborated with the Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service, a foundation with the goal of gather a diversified team who are committed to social welfare, creating a “social services laboratory” that provides innovative, professional and diversified social services. On this day we had a total of 13 volunteers, bringing their positive spirits, energy, and happiness, making the event filled with joy and smiles.

The event opened with an exciting warm-up session led by the volunteer coaches, who were immensely passionate and happy to help. This warm-up session consisted of minigames, such as line tag, and agility warm ups, such as moving a ball from the singles to doubles side line, vice versa.

Volunteer coaches then led the kids through a forehand and backhand shadowing session, in which after they further improved technique, after which they fed balls, and the kids were able to feel the sensation of hitting tennis balls.

After a short break, the kids got back on court and took turns hitting the targets on court, showing their improved technique, and perseverance. The kids demonstrated the skills they learned throughout the day, and many were able to hit many targets. Volunteer coaches also got involved, whether it meant feeding the balls, encourage the kids, or picking up balls.

As the event winded down, the kids experienced a what is was like playing tennis, and had a great deal of fun. Volunteer coaches, too, learned some valuable lessons and morals. In essence, it really was a wonderful day out on the courts.

Game On and Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service would like to say how grateful we are for all of our volunteers and sponsors. Starting with Decathlon, without them, we would not have been able to run this event smoothly, with all the wonderful volunteers they have provided us with! Furthermore, we would also like to thank Viveresky Group and Coach S, for providing us with all the tennis balls that we used, without them we would not have any balls to hit.

Game On continues striving to bring sport to underprivileged children in Hong Kong through this event and many more to come.
